Winemaker of the year 2008
A delighted Francisco Albuquerque was awarded the Fortified Winemaker of the Year Trophy for the third year running at the International Wine Challenge dinner in London last week. No other winemaker from any other region has equalled this remarkable achievement in the 25 year history of the Challenge.
Francisco observed that this was not only an honour for him, but also a fantastic honour for the wines of Madeira generally and the many dedicated viticulturists who nurture their vines with great care, despite the difficult topography of the island. He went on to say that although Madeira may only be a tiny drop in the vast ocean of wine it is very pleasing to see it recognised as one of the finest wines in the world.
In the Fortified category of this year’s Challenge, there were over 270 other entries from all over the world, so it was no mean achievement on Francisco’s part. Added to which, in this year’s three major UK tasting competitions (International Wine Challenge, The Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine & Spirit Competition), Blandy’s won an amazing total of 2 Trophies, 7 Gold Medals and 14 Silver Medals
Blandy’s was founded in 1811 and remains today a family business, owned and managed by direct descendants of the founder, John Blandy, in partnership with the Symington family of Oporto and the Douro.
